Discipline is not a personality trait. It is what happens when good decisions are made the easy default. The aim of this lesson is to design your environment so that following your plan takes less effort than breaking it.
If-then rules
Decide in advance how you will respond to specific situations, so you do not have to decide under pressure. Examples:
- If I hit my daily loss limit, then I close the platform until tomorrow.
- If price moves before I am in, then I do not chase it.
- If I feel the urge to increase size after a loss, then I take a ten-minute break and read my plan.
A pre-trade checklist
A short list of questions you must answer before every trade forces a pause between impulse and action. A sample is on the free resources page. Keep it short enough to complete, and honest enough that a "no" really means no trade.
A daily routine
A routine reduces the number of decisions you make. For example:
- Review the higher timeframes and write down your key levels.
- Check scheduled news and decide in advance whether to avoid it.
- Confirm your risk limits for the day.
- Trade only inside a fixed window.
- Review the day at the end and close the platform.
Environment
Reduce triggers: turn off price alerts you do not need, keep your phone out of reach, avoid trading when tired, rushed or after an argument, and never trade with money you need.
Make it visible
Put your rules where you can see them. The most useful reminder is the one in front of you at the moment of temptation.
